The Art of Seeing: Developing Your Photographic Vision (Day 1 of 2)
The Art of Seeing: Developing Your Photographic Vision (Day 1 of 2)
Nov 14 to Nov 15 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Indian Creek Nature Center 5300 Otis Road SE Cedar Rapids, IA 52403 (319) 362-0664Overview
"Compelling photographs begin with learning how to slow down, observe, and recognize visual possibilities that others might overlook. During this hands-on, two-day workshop, participants will explore light, color, shape, line, texture, pattern, perspective, visual relationships, and how lens selection changes the way a subject is interpreted. Indoor photography exercises at Indian Creek Nature Center, along with outdoor exercises when weather permits, will challenge participants to create multiple interpretations of a subject using different focal lengths, camera positions, and compositional choices. Through guided assignments, image selection, processing, discussion, and constructive critique, participants will begin identifying their visual preferences and developing a more intentional and personal photographic vision.
WHAT PARTICIPANTS SHOULD BRING
Participants should bring their camera and every lens they own so they can experiment with different focal lengths and better understand how lens selection changes perspective, composition, subject isolation, background compression, and the amount of environmental context included in an image. They should also bring fully charged batteries, memory cards, camera manual, laptop computer, card reader or other downloading device, and their preferred image-processing software. A tripod is recommended but not required. Participants should bring their lunch each day and dress appropriately for an optional short outdoor exercise if weather permits.
