Built in 1919, this was the first hotel in Cedar Rapids and one of the oldest hotels in Iowa. Then there was the 19-story Equitable Building (1924) and then, in Wisconsin, a Graduate Hotel-flagged hotel that opened in 2015.
When the foundation was nearing completion, the Cedar Rapids Hotel Co. transferred control of the future hotel to Jackson E. Montrose and Charles McHugh, who signed a 15-year lease on June 16, 1904 for a $1.5 million investment in the hotel and $2,200 in capital. The Montrose, whose officers were the Iowa Hotel Company and the C.R.A.H.C., kept the hotel. In 1965, a group of businessmen, William Abbott, Charles A. Averill and William H. Sheraton, founded the Montrose Hotel Co., and acquired it from the Sheraton - Aaverill Estate.
