Cedar Rapids Iowa Restaurants
One of the first craft breweries in the city has been chosen for the heart of the old Czech village, and if you ask me, it's going great. The craft brewery only landed on the pad a few months ago in time for Christmas and New Year.
The space, which was once home to a traditional bar and grill, was given a new lease of life in June 2017 when owners Christina and Mitch Springman opened their internationally-inspired burger restaurant. The same artistry that flows into their coffee blends adorns their tacos and beignets, and their wood-fired pizzas and craft beer make me want to return again and again. It follows Cobble Hill, named after an old Brooklyn neighborhood that has proven more attractive to people who have moved to the NewBo neighborhood. It is one of the best restaurants in the city and always offers something new to try.
If you're not particularly good at sharing food, Flying Wienie always has a few big plates. In fine weather they prepare a picnic for the guests to take away - away. Real hot dog fans can shop on foot, or exchange the fries for a second dog. Flying and Wiensie offer a wide selection of sandwiches, including pulled pork, chicken, pork chops, burgers and cheese and topping sandwiches.
For vegetables - Breakfast and lunch forward, go to Rawlicious opposite Newbo Market. Visitors can open up and taste omelettes, pancakes, chorizo and eggs, as well as a variety of salads and pastries.
The Croissant du Jour is open for lunch and also offers an open lunch with tasty soups, salads, sandwiches and quiches to eat and take away at the restaurant. When the weather is cold and grey and you are looking for something warm, they offer a variety of rotating soup specialties as well as a wide selection of pastries.
Those looking for instant gratification can choose between tacos, dumplings or falafel, but also whole cakes and pastry tins are available, which you just have to order and need. Bebe is a grass-fed vendor selling beef, lamb, pork, chicken, turkey and pork chops, as well as a variety of other meats.
Don't forget to order baklava and Ethiopian coffee for dessert and don't tear yourself away from food while you scoop it all up.
I also recommend the Pindi Chana, but I remember this meal as one of the best meals I have ever eaten in Cedar Rapids. Start with the braised potatoes, the liquid rice, the puffed sesame rice and the mint, and then order the pickled onions, cabbage and flatbread with a side of baklava.
The chana masala is deliciously spicy and comes on a bed of brown rice, topped with mint, coriander and mango chutney.
The taco salad bowl is topped with home-baked chips, and the platter is a generous portion of the tasty dish, complemented by a side of chutney and cashew sour cream and a dollop of fresh lime juice.
Duck noodle soup is an excellent choice, with a richly spiced broth spooned over one side of chicken, pork, shrimp and pork belly, plus a generous dollop of sweet and sour sauce. The Cajun Red Bean rice bowl is hearty and full of rich, spicy red beans and rice, as well as abundant cheddar cheese.
The dog is freshly cooked with Red Hot Chicago Brand and served with toppings that include cheddar cheese, cilantro, garlic, onions, tomatoes, peppers, onions and peppers. The dog can be prepared vegan, and the options for plant-based pizza topping include a variety of vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, kale, spinach, carrots, celery and tomatoes.
If you're looking for a healthier option, the kale salad is light and refreshing, and the Bar Burger offers a delicious selection. Fries are great, but make a stop to sample the gourmet soup of the day. Fresh every day, I chose the maytag chicken cobb salad with a side of green beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, celery, peppers and tomatoes.
Dinner was a little more hearty, as I opted for the slow-smoked hickory baby ribs with tarragon and buttered sirloin and a side of pico de gallo. Guests can sit at the sushi bar and opt for rolls with spicy tuna, salmon, avocado and yellowtail. For something different, sit down at a Hibachi table and have your own chef prepare it right in front of your eyes. Guests can sit at a table or meet at their sushi bars and choose from a variety of rolls, such as a roll of sushi rolls with avocado, tuna and avocado.
My favourite dishes at Newbo's were pork ribs with cheddar cheese sauce and a side of pico de gallo. There are also a variety of vegan options, including tacos, curries, pizza and bowls.
If you fancy an adventure, New Tribe, the restaurant's house band, plays on Thursday night and is a highly entertaining occasion not to be missed. On a beautiful evening, Caucho's is a great place with a welcoming ambience, good food and excellent service.
